How to compare renovation quotes: items, qualities and exclusions

Receiving two quotes with different amounts does not mean that one is expensive and the other is cheap. Before comparing them, you need to check what work each proposal includes, how it has been measured and what materials it includes. The difference may be in a kitchen with different equipment, in an installation that is being retained or in finishes that have not yet been valued.

A useful comparison starts by equalizing the scope. From there you will be able to decide which solution fits your home, your priorities and the investment you want to make.

Prepare the same description for all proposals

When each company receives different information, the offers will hardly be comparable. Gather a simple document with the rooms to be renovated, the distribution changes, the elements you want to keep and the usage requirements.

Accompany it with photographs and plans if you have them. Also point out open decisions: for example, if you have not yet chosen the countertop or if you are considering replacing the windows. These options should be recognized as such and not mixed with already defined work.

Distinguish exclusions, options and work to be defined

These are different situations. An exclusion is work that is not part of the proposal. An option is an improvement that can be contracted separately. Work to be defined needs additional information before closing its scope.

What to request before making a decision

Request an updated version that incorporates the agreed clarifications, with identification of the proposal and its date. Also keep the materials documents and any plan that is part of the scope.
